Editing Services

Editors help writers through every stage of the manuscript process, from planning and brainstorming all the way through proofreading. Editors may specialize in a couple of stages of draft development or offer services from the beginning to the end of the project. You may prefer to work with one editor who specializes in early stage development to help you organize your thoughts and an eagle-eyed editor with an ear for language when you reach the copyediting stage. Or you may prefer to work with one editor only. There are pros and cons to both approaches. In the end, it’s best if you find one or more editors you click with and whose work you trust.

Not sure what level of help you need? No fear. Check out the descriptions below (arranged from beginning of project to completion) to see what type of assistance is right for you.

No matter which service you require, I’ll keep all work in the strictest confidence.

Just the Plan

If you have an idea for your non-fiction manuscript, but aren’t quite sure how to organize it or what your message is, one of my Just the Plan sessions may be the way to go. During your Just the Plan session, we will:

  • discuss your goals for your book
  • explore the commercial viability of your book
  • determine what sets your book apart from other books in the market
  • solidify your message
  • identify the main content to include
  • devise a plan that will guide you through the drafting process

One Just the Plan session may be all you need to kick-start your draft, although you may find a follow-up session helpful if the writing lags.

Fee: $75 per one-hour call. Full fee must be paid to book the service.

Hell Yeah! Mentoring

If you would prefer a series of planning sessions, my Hell Yeah! package may be right for you. It’s a mentorship program designed to help new non-fiction authors bring their books to life. The Hell Yeah! program offers planning support as well as frequent check-ins and feedback as needed, and works with authors from start to completion of the draft.

Fee: $75 per one-hour call; buy a five-pack and save 10%. Initial fee must be paid to book the service and we will discuss payment options for ongoing services during our first call.

Keep on Track Accountability

If nothing gets done in your life without a deadline, then my Keep on Track Accountability Program might be just what you need to finally complete your draft.

Keep on Track starts with an initial discussion of your book and your goals, and we will chart a plan to help you reach those goals.

Each week, I’ll check in with you via email to see how the writing is going, and you’ll provide an update. If you need even more of an incentive than your self-report to me to Keep on Track, we can organize some stakes. A favorite incentive is a check large enough to hurt your pocketbook made out to your most despised charity and mailed in the event of the author’s failure to meet an agreed milestone.

Fee: $50 to get started, $40 per month. Initial fee must be paid to book the service and we will discuss payment options for ongoing services during our first call.

Gut Reaction Critique

A non-fiction manuscript critique provides a big-picture overview of your book’s effectiveness. My Gut Reaction Critique assesses the clarity of your message, the overall organization, the supporting content, and how the book is differentiated from others already in the market.

As I read your draft, I will annotate it with my thoughts, impressions, and questions as well as recommendations regarding where to cut, expand or better organize the material. I’ll provide a detailed letter addressing the book’s high points and noting where you can improve your draft to better serve your readers.

Please note this type of editing does not focus specifically on language or correcting basic grammar issues. Such work typically happens during line editing, copyediting and proofreading.

About a week after I return your manuscript and the Gut Reaction Critique, we will have a one-hour phone call to discuss the draft, my comments, and your next steps.

Fee: $0.018-0.025 per word. I’ll need to evaluate a representative sample chapter or two of your work before providing an estimate for editing services.

Payment plan: 1/3 to book a date on the calendar, 1/3 when you submit your book for editing, and 1/3 when edited file is returned to you. If you’d prefer a different arrangement, please feel free to suggest it.

Play to Your Strengths Developmental Edit

A developmental edit ensures your book delivers the content that you promise your readers. The first step in a Play to Your Strengths Developmental Edit is understanding your chief concerns about the draft and your goals for the book. With those in mind, I will read your book and make or suggest ways to strengthen your message and improve the content, the organization and flow, and the presentation. Developmental editing can also involve research and rewriting sections of the draft.

Please note this type of editing does not focus specifically on language or correcting basic grammar issues. Such work typically happens during line editing, copyediting and proofreading.

When I return your marked-up draft (with track changes enabled), I’ll include a letter that provides additional insights about your book as well as some suggestions and next steps. About a week after I return these, we will have a one-hour phone call to discuss the draft, my comments, and your next steps.

Fee: $0.018-0.03 per word. I’ll need to evaluate a representative sample chapter of your work before providing an estimate for editing services.

Payment plan: 1/3 to book a date on the calendar, 1/3 when you submit your book for editing, and 1/3 when edited file is returned to you. If you’d prefer a different arrangement, please feel free to suggest it.

Line-by-Line Substantive Edit

Line editing or substantive editing is heavy copyediting. It is time- and labor-intensive. My Line-by-Line Substantive Edit ensures your text makes sense and improves the readability of your draft. In some cases, this might require writing, rewriting or deleting content (always using track changes). Line by Line, I’ll make sure your message is clear and your tone is consistent. A Line-by-Line edit also focuses on language at the sentence level.

Fee: $0.025-0.04 per word.

Clean Copyedit & Eagle-Eyed Proofread

A Clean Copyedit includes my Eagle-Eyed Proofread. A basic copyedit corrects spelling, grammar, punctuation and syntax. It will catch problems with word usage, and it will bring consistency to your usage of bullets, jargon, numbers, acronyms, quoted material, etc. In my Clean Copyedit, I’ll also correct minor formatting issues. Edits will be made with track changes enabled. I’ll return the manuscript for you to accept/reject the changes and make a final pass over your document before returning it to me for the Eagle-Eyed Proofread.

Please note, this type of editing does not address larger-picture issues, such as delivery of your message or organization of your content.

Fee: $0.018-0.025.

Frustration-Free Format

Are you self-publishing your book and need it formatted? I can handle most formatting requests and return .epub and .mobi files for e-books and a .pdf to send to CreateSpace for print on demand.

Fee: starts at $90, depends on complexity of file and number of formats required. Brief consult and assessment of files will be necessary to set the fee. Full fee must be paid to book the service.
